RCT Licenses Tissue Harmonic Ultrasound Imaging Technology to Industry Leader
Tucson, AZ – Jun 03, 2002
Research Corporation Technologies (RCT) has granted Acuson, a Siemens company, and its affiliates a nonexclusive license to patent rights for tissue harmonic ultrasound imaging technology.
Acuson is part of the Siemens Medical Solutions Ultrasound Division in Mountain View, Calif. The division is the U.S. market leader in ultrasound, providing ultrasound solutions across a wide range of clinical environments, including general radiology, cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, urology and vascular imaging.
Hospitals, clinics and healthcare delivery systems worldwide use Siemens’ Acuson® and SONOLINE® ultrasound products. These include the Acuson Sequoia®, Aspen® and 128XP® ultrasound systems with the Native™ Tissue Harmonic Imaging (THI) option, and the SONOLINE Antares, Elegra and Omnia systems with the Ensemble™ THI option. THI technology has a profound impact on image quality and diagnoses, including the reduction of artifacts (image noise and clutter) produced by difficult-to-image, patient body-wall tissue and the dramatic increase in contrast resolution.
Dr. Ted Christopher developed the important tissue harmonic imaging technology at the University Rochester’s Center for Biomedical Ultrasound. He demonstrated that the second and higher order harmonic response of tissue to an ultrasound beam can be used to produce a sharper image than that of the traditional first harmonic.
Tucson-based RCT manages this technology for the university. The company received U.S. Patent No. 6,206,833 for the technology in March 2001. Another U.S. application is pending. The Rochester Center for Biomedical Ultrasound unites the university’s medical and engineering communities. Center researchers investigate use of very high-frequency sound waves in medical diagnosis and treatment, and other medical imaging applications.
